How to Prevent Periodontal Disease (PD)  be happy, healthy, and save money

TO KNOW AND REMEMBER:

  • PD is an infection of the gums and the part of the jaw bone that hold your teeth in your mouth. The bad bacteria (germs) that cause this infection/inflamtion cannot live in air (they are anaerobes).
  • Bleeding gums, Swollen gums, Receding gums, are all among the first noticeable physical signs of  PD.
  • It is a silent killer. You do NOT want PD! (see May and April 2017 articles)

PREVENTION:

  • Stay healthy. Get plenty of exercise and have a good diet. This makes you less likely to get sick from any infection including PD.
  • Thoroughly clean all the sides of all your teeth once every twenty four hours (see Jan and Feb 2017 articles)
  • If you have no symptoms have a routine saliva test for the bacteria that cause PD. This will save you thousands of dollars and time in a dental chair. Always better to catch and stop this infection before it causes damage to your mouth and body.
  • if you have symptoms and/or you have been treated for PD be sure the treatment has worked and there is no re-infection by having saliva tests after treatment and then yearly.(see April 2017 article)
  • Remember that the only way you can get this disease is from other people's saliva. This is why you don't see dentists kissing people on the mouth...we are selective and rarely, if ever,  kiss our children on the mouth.

you say/think:  "HEY, LADY! WE LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD."

I say:  " OK, OK, I get it! "

When you have exchanged saliva with someone who is not known to you...
HERE IS A SIMPLE, INEXPENSIVE WAY TO PROTECT YOURSELF:

This method is old.  It was resurrected and defined in the 1970's by a NIH scientist. It is now called the Keye's (after the 1970s scientist who resurrected it)  method/ technique .

  • You will need three things: (1). Baking SODA. (2). 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, (3). a Rubber Tip Stimulator (Buter or Gum)    All pictured in the photo below.
  • Recipe: 1 teaspoon baking soda mixed with 1 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide (must mix immediately before use). This mix will be half way between a paste and a liquid (technically a slurry).
  • GENTLY smear the mixture with a CLEAN finger on the necks of the teeth (where the tooth and the gum meet, see below)).
  • Do this on both the tongue side and the cheek side of the teeth.
  • Using the rubber tip stimulator GENTLY go around each tooth with the rubber tip stimulator following the gum (see below).
  •  You can do this one part of the mouth at a time OR all the mouth at once.  Rinse, brush, floss.  Rinse gain.

(hint: you can also use this method if you have been diagnosed with PD...it often reduces the amount of needed surgery saving you money)

TO SEE WHAT I MEAN BY " NECKS OF THE TEETH" AND How to  USE A RUBBER TIP STIMULATOR: see video: 'Rubber Tip Stimulator'  by Dr Berdy* in Jacksonville FL on YOUTUBE.COM.  NOTE: YOU WILL HAVE Baking Soda /Hydrogen Peroxide mixture in your mouth and you will only go around each tooth ONCE.  You DO NOT have to push the mixture into the gum! THINK GENTLE

Another option:

Not as effective as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide but very helpful:

A mouth rinse called TOOTH AND GUM TONIC,  made by the Dental Herb Company

and now available online.  I routinely used this mouthwash in my dental practice. It does not stain the teeth and the patients actually complied...a BIG HELP!

WARNING: IF YOUR GUMS BLEED SEE A DENTIST!  YOU HAVE AN INFECTION AND YOU NEED HELP

(note: this is esp. true for pregnant women! pregnancy does not equal bleeding gums...it is NOT hormonal)

*found on Youtube, do not know this dentist. I liked his thorough video instructions.
